House Designs!

I've decided to revisit a school project I really enjoyed. My last semester of school, I was so busy with BFA, I didn't have the time I would have liked, to dedicate to this project from 117B, where we concept'd out a sci-fi story. I chose Zero Hour, by Ray Bradbury. So, here goes!

I started with some house designs...

Lokalhelt!

This is a recent freelance job I did for a bank in Norway.

They needed a poster for a contest where they reward a local hero. They wanted to include average looking people, holding hands together and the original idea was to have the Helgelandsbridge and Stetind mountain(local landmarks) printed on their sweaters with the Northern Lights in the background.

They mentioned Indiana Jones as style reference, so naturally I looked up some Drew Struzan and took some ideas for a few early roughs. This project had a very quick turnaround, so I used a lot of layers, so I could reuse drawings and move things around easily.

I didn't think putting the landmarks on their sweaters would read clearly, but I did a few versions like that regardless. It's important to always do what the client asks, whether you think it's a good idea or not, because you may not understand their motives entirely. If you have a better idea, show them that in other versions, but always make sure you meet their requirements first. My former professors, Courtney Granner and Bunny Carter, would rake us over the coals anytime someone decided to ignore assignment guidelines, for this reason. Literally. They had a coal pit.

Here is a few of the early roughs (including the color rough):

Again, I had to meet a quick deadline, so I didn't have time to shoot my own reference (or fly to Norway). Instead, I took images off the internet and Frankenstein'd them together the best I could.

With that, I drew a rough line drawing on top and blocked in the colors.

I got a few notes, such as widening the age gap between characters and changing some of them out of the sweaters (which they originally asked for), as well as adding a bit of diversity.
A little this, little that, and alllll done.

When I was already pretty far along, they mentioned they needed a widescreen version as well as a facebook banner. O_O
Thankfully, I'm very anal about keeping organized layers because another former professor, Thomas Esmeralda, said that one day, this would save my life. And it did.

I was able to move some layers, clean up the edges, little slap and tickle, and boom. All done.

Very fun project!

Maya's Notebook

Almost forgot about this stuff! This is concept work for one of my last projects in BFA, a few months back, based on the book, “Maya’s Notebook.”

This was an earlier version of the main character, Maya.
Here is the final design of Maya at three different stages of the story...

I hadn't had much experience drawing cars, so I tried to tackle this design. My big mistake was that I tried to ride the line between realistic and stylized, so I ended up with just a poorly drawn car.

Here are a few story moments...

Study. 9Aug13.

20 min. color study.

A little bit of a tacky photo reference choice, but so what? Huh?? What about it??  Just let me do what I want! (I chose it for the bounce light, okay?)

Study

A quick study of a photo. I tried painting in one layer using a more 'Sargeant' approach, which I've always struggled with, because I get impatient. I'll try to do a lot more this summer.

Meowth - Rare Candy Gallery

Done for the "Rare Candy" gallery show/charity, that will open May 3rd, in downtown San Jose.

I think a tumblr with all the art will be released when the show opens, but it's an awesome concept a couple of my classmates came up with, where a 151 different artists each got a different Pokemon to paint however they choose.

I was assigned Meowth. I didn't watch Pokemon as a kid, so I didn't know any sweet Pokemon jokes to make, so I made my guy kickin' back, smokin' a cig for some reason. Rough day of Pokemon-ing, I guess..

This was the first watercolor I've done in a long time, and I had a blast! I'll definitely be doing more this summer.

"Zero Hour," by Ray Bradbury

Development for the story, “Zero Hour”, by Ray Bradbury. These are still works in progress, so hopefully I can return to them soon.

Wishing Well

Finally have some time to post work!

This was a really fun project called the "Wishing Well". We were given a country of origin (I was given the Netherlands) and the basic story of a child who discovers an ancient wishing well, where a creature hides. One of the funnest projects I've ever had, and while it's maybe not my best work, I learned a huge amount, and made a big leap forward.
